St Vincent de Paul National Volunteer Week runs from 9-15 May this year and is continuing last year’s theme, “Give Happy, Live Happy.” More than 6 million Australian volunteers give happiness to others each year. And research says that that those volunteers are happier as a result. 95% of Australia’s not-for-profit organisations are run by volunteers.
Wilcannia Forbes Central Council of the St Vincent de Paul Society, are proud to acknowledge the invaluable contribution our wonderful volunteers make in the delivery of services to their respective communities. National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and allows our Society to join with other volunteer organisations to say ‘thank you’, for without your tireless contribution the Society would not exist. These tireless efforts do not go unnoticed.
The St Vincent de Paul Society in Balranald has 21 volunteers working in their Centre at 91 Market Street. The funds raised in the centre go towards providing support to the less advantaged and marginalised in the Balranald area, in the form of food parcels, clothing, bedding and household items, assistance with energy bills and other utilities, rates, transport, medical bills and budget assistance. More important than all these practical needs is the emotional support and referral service we provide.
The Vinnies volunteers are always looking for more volunteers to assist them in this work. Men and women of all ages and denominations are welcome. Even a couple of hours a week would be a great help. Your local Vinnies Centre has a very friendly, social environment and the work provides a special sense of satisfaction you get from helping others and learning new skills. Various tasks include sorting donated goods, serving at the counter, clerical, basic computer, interviewing and listening to people in need. If you are interested in volunteering, call in at the Vinnies Centre, or telephone (03) 5020 1241. We would love to hear from you. “Give happy, live happy”!.
