The Balranald Shire Council in conjunction with the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) maintains a significant network of roads throughout the Shire encompassing regional, main and local roads. Council aims to maintain the existing road network in good condition with the financial resources available and to improve existing surfacing wherever possible.

Road conditions and closures can change regularly due to weather conditions. Motorists are advised to travel according to the road conditions at all times, and please refrain from travelling on closed roads. Balranald Shire Council appeals to all drivers planning to travel within the Shire area to assist in preventing damage to the unsealed roads by choosing an alternative route or waiting until drier conditions prevail when wet weather occurs. Flagrant and irresponsible disregard for this appeal could lead to prosecution to the full extent of the law. Appropriate warning signage exists at key locations.

Motorists should look out for appropriate signage indicating works underway ahead and any dangerous condition identified can be reported directly to Council on 03 5020 1300.
Rural Property Addressing
Council has adopted the rural address number system in accordance with the Australian Standard. These rural property addresses are displayed via the number on a white metal post adjacent to the property entrance. All emergency services are supplied with a comprehensive document for ease of locating properties. If you have any enquiries regarding rural addressing, street or road signs, or business and tourist directional signs please contact Council.
Driveway Cross Overs
When installing any driveway crossover from the road to the property boundary it must be constructed to a standard acceptable to the Council and suitably reinforced for the weight of vehicles entering the property.
Consultation with the Council Engineering Department is necessary prior to construction.
Street Trees
Street trees within Balranald Shire are community property and it is an offence to damage or remove one. Any concerns relating to street trees should be addressed to the Council who will investigate the issue and take any appropriate action.
Footpath Program
Proposals for pedestrian access improvements are contained in Council’s Pedestrian Access and MobilityPlan and may be viewed at Council’s offices.
The Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) completes maintenance works on roads on a regular- or as needs basis, and forwards a report of current and future maintenance for our (South West) region. The report is to advise residents and travelers to these areas of changes to traffic conditions, including some delays.

Swan Hill Bridge maintenance work

State Highway
The Sturt Highway links east with west through both the townships of Balranald and Euston. State Highways are traditionally maintained by NSW Roads and Maritime Services however, Council have an interest in maintaining the verges and incidents such as pollution, fire, traffic and other hazards should be reported to Council immediately who will liaise with the RMS.
Travelling motorists should note that there are approximately eight (8) rest areas along this section of highway providing adequate off road parking, two of which (Meilman and Lake Benanee) have toilet facilities. Both the Yanga Lake and Lake Benanee parking areas have direct access to their respective lake foreshores. Caravan parking and camping areas are available.
When is a road opening permit required?
When a plumber, builder or member of the public needs to dig or under-bore in the road reservation. Common reasons for requiring a Road Opening Permit are:
To ensure no existing underground services are damaged, you must complete a “Dial Before You Dig” application by calling 1100 or by going to the “Dial Before You Dig” website www.1100.com.au , then investigate with Council staff as to locations of other services i.e. water and sewer mains, then accurately locate and protect any existing services before commencing work.
